139: [Solo] How to avoid triggering Fight, Flight, or Freeze responses in others

Our brains are wired to avoid threats and to react to perceived threats by Fight, Flight, or Freeze responses: fighting them, fleeing from them, or sometimes freezing from the shock. These threat responses are not limited just to physical danger and have been shown to occur in social and work settings as well. In solo episode 139 (which was based on this popular blog post), I explained the science behind the “FFF” threat responses (Fight, Flight, or Freeze) and showed you how to avoid triggering these kind of social threat responses in all your work interactions. By being more aware of what can trigger them, the negative ramifications, and how to avoid this kind of situation, you will be able to get more rational, better quality, and less disruptive responses in your workplace communication and beyond.

‘Ask Halelly’ episodes of the TalentGrow Show are solo episodes in which I answer a question from a listener, a member of the audience at one of my conference speaking events, a learner in one of my corporate workshops, or a member of the media.

Confidence is a major contributing factor to accomplishing our goals and how we are perceived in the workplace. However, it's not a naturally occurring trait in all of us. Do you suffer from low confidence? This one’s for you, then.

In this episode, I explain the difference between earned and unmerited confidence. Then I break down how we can build our confidence in a way that is professional and empowering, demonstrate our confidence in a way that gets us noticed for new opportunities, and avoid being seen as pompous or boastful, or worse, full of air and empty of content.

Episode 102: [Solo] Six Principles of Effective Communication

Communication is hard! We all have relationships in which we communicate with ease, and others in which we feel like we’re “walking on eggshells” – always careful with our words, trying not to offend or create a defensive response. It’s natural to have different levels of communication chemistry with different personalities and there’s no way to fully level the playing field. Yet, it’s also possible to reduce the likelihood of defensiveness and to increase our success when we communicate with just about anyone, anywhere. In this solo episode on the TalentGrow Show, I shared six principles that can help you communicate more effectively in any situation.
